Howdy all,

I've started rebuilding a fork brain cartridge and thought I'd share. Fork is a 2012 SID off a SJ I think. Top brain fade and rebound adjustments.

This fork came to me with unknown mileage or service history. Upon strip down I found all nitrogen pressure had been lost, the pellet stopper grub screw wasn't tight.

Three shaft clamps are needed to work on the cartridge, with one clamp required on the damping rod which is a sealing surface, scratch this rod and it's a write off, back to specialized you go.

So the IFP ( internal floating piston ) is raw aluminium, which has trashed the oil. With no nitrogen pressure the IFP was rocking about, striking the walls of the tube, adding to oil contamination.

I will be turning up a new IFP and anodising it.

Fully disassembled: Image

I will be replacing the rubber pellet/grub screw arrangement with a Schrader valve out the bottom of the cartridge.

Ooh, I like where this is going. Thank you for taking time to start the thread and I look forward to the rest of the rebuild. :)

So I've got an e100 on my work bench. Customer handed it over as it's no longer holding air, and the brain unit wasn't working.

Under inspection the Brain has no plastic plug in it, and no nitrogen. (Fork spent some time "at a buddy house getting worked on" so I'm guessing someone went exploring and dumped the nitrogen)

Customer doesn't care about Brain function, just wants a fork to hold air.

So, question 1: can the fork be run without nitrogen charge for the brain unit? and 2: which are the air seals to be looking at which may be causing loss of air?

I pulled the fork apart and was pretty amazed at how clean it was inside the upper tube. Nice clear looking Slick Honey type grease everywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.
