If you directly linked to this thread, please visit our Fox Factory Service Information - Main Index for additional resources.

Fox recommends a flat (chamferless) 26mm socket when servicing their forks. The lip around the top of the TALAS and RLC cartridge is very short and apparently prone to rounding-off if you use a standard 12 point chamfered socket.

I don't have one of these special sockets. But, I have a grinder and a will to succeed. ;)

I purchased a chamfered 6 point 26mm socket from the auto parts store for about $7.

Mounted it on an extension and fired up the grinder. Holding the extension, I let the end of the socket rest upon the edge of the housing and the work platform. I slowly spun the socket while feeding it into the side of the grinding wheel. I would grind for 30-45 seconds and then stop to check. After a couple of minutes, I had this.

Here is the finished result.

Let me know if you have any questions.

You need to replace one of the grinding wheels with a 3M EXL deburring wheel (fine grit) and buff all the grinds away and make it shiny. :)

Will shiny make it work any better? ;)

Edit, just looked it up. About $50 for one of those. I don't need $50 worth of shiny.

It will take care of the sharp edges, so your top caps don't get scratched up.

Considering all the stuff you make, S. just gave you a good advice ;)

$50? You're doing it wrong.

Besides, shiny always gives you 5hp more!

I did knock off the sharp edges on the inside and outside with 220 grit sandpaper. Guess I left that out of the DIY. :(

Shibi Claus, please point me to the lesser costing alternative. :)

Even better - Shibi-claus will send you a used one if he can find it. (i.e. used but over 2" undersized but still very useable - original is 6" but this one is like 4" dia). I usually order them from Enco (http://use-enco.com) - price is about $35 for 6" x 1" x 1" .
