When you hit a bump, the chain goes slack an does the wave from the cassette to the ring, then you pedal and, whoops, your nuts just ran into the stem.

^^^^This

I ran 1 X 9 for years and ended up with the shark tooth + BBC bash guard.

Worked great.

Only Hammy had enough tech to shake the chain loose. (twice a year maybe)

Wmac you need the small ring for Chickasaw.

You can win races with the small ring there

I never hit the small ring at any of the trails around here. Maybe on the dump climb on a third lap or something.

It may be the image that fools me, but it seems to me that there is too little room for the inner plates on the wide teeth?
Also keep in mind, that the position relative to the roller, is changing as the chain wears.

What are you expecting to gain by using asymmetric tooth profile?
Is that something you got experience with from something else?
If you don't have some sort of ace up your sleeve, I'd much rather have symmetric profile, and a wider area on the wide teeth, as I would expect the wide teeth to see significant wear.

This is no where close to final. I still got to go double check all the sizes (of different chains) in order to make it work universally, so the wide/narrow teeth shape/thickness is not final yet.

Asymmetric tooth profiles are designed to "catch" the chain better on takeup (i.e. top side of chainring) and release it easier on the bottom side of the chainring, a modified design, based off a high speed/high efficiency/low noise automotive roller chain system (and since there was no FD to worry about, this design should work pretty well... I hope) :D :D

The teeth are also disproportionally taller to help prevent chain loss. :)

Work in progress - that's why I have labrats like you. :laughing-rolling:

I plan to use this sort of rungs on my SS bikes as well, as it ought to make for a more smooth running chain.

In that case it just might be a great idea.

FYI - this is designed for 1x whatever drivetrain. Hoping to see if I can make a run tomorrow or Monday.

Close to final design. Tooth profile is close to final. This one is specific to 1x10, designed to replace a 1x104 BCD mid ring (i.e. behind spider so a matching bashguard can fit over it.

Post pics of your cranksets so I know what variants I should be planning to make.

Dunno... target retail pricing is probably be $80-$90... but lab rats get them for material cost + shipping..... and the regular HK crew who don't want to risk themselves being labrats would get discounted pricing of course. ;)

Not sure if XX1 chain will play nicely with 10 speed cassette and RD......it is likely narrower than a 10 sp chain.

.....and what's wrong with 10sp chains?
I see no reason to pick an 11sp chain for a 10sp system?

Cost wasn't different - didn't know if chain profile was optimized for use with ring AND would work with 10sp cassette.

The chain profile is the same, just more narrow.

...just worried about the RD and cassette since its designed for a wider chain so shifting may be rough....

Shibi - when do you think you'll have this Shizi ready to go? Do you still have that 10 speed cassette?

I'm seconds away from doing this:
