I'm going to start this thread and I'll update after I get a good bleed on them. I think I solved the issue of getting the air bubbles out of the syringes. I refilled them with fluid, pulled up on the plungers to pull a vacuum and set them plunger side up and let them sit for a couple of hours. It looks like all the tiny bubbles migrated to the plunger side of the syringes. I drew another vacuum on them and no more bubbles appeared. I'm planning to do the bleed tomorrow.

More to come.

I re-bled my brakes again and it seemed like I got a good bleed on them, however the levers still go down to the bars. If i put rubber bands on the levers to hold them tight to the bars and let them sit overnight the levers sit about 2 + inches away and feel good. But they then slowly loose pressure and pull back down to the bars again. I'm going to try and bleed them again and see what happens. I really want to like these brakes but.........

btw the brakes are new.

A set of these showed up as a new-take-off locally on CL, and I admit I was tempted. Also, local high-end HT's have been speccing them lately, as well (GT Zaskar Expert). It's disappointing that you've been having such a hard time with them. Keep us updated.

OK, after the 3rd time doing a bleed I think finally got it right. The main problem I was having was following the sequence on a you tube video. The video showed removing the little o-ring on the bleed port and other steps that didn't make sense. So what I ended up doing was pushing fluid from the caliper to the lever. Then I squeezed the lever and secured it with a rubber band on the bar. I pulled a vacuum on the caliper side and then on the lever side. I held the plungers up for 45 to 60 sec and I got tiny bubbles out. I released the lever slowly while pushing fluid from the caliper to the lever. I pulled vacuum on both sides again before I removed the syringes and replaced the plugs on the bleed ports. The lever travel is much better although it's not as good as my Magura's or my XT's. If it wasn't for the foot of rain that we are going to get by Sunday, I'd do a test ride. Maybe next week.

I'll update later as I may do one more bleed on them.

Did you at least manage to get a firm feel of the lever?
It sounds awfully much like the Avid Elixir story. :(

Lever feel is much better, however the problem was both levers were going all the way to the bar when I squeezed them. Not much modulation because of that. I'm light on my levers when I brake and pretty much didn't leave much braking control.

I have to admit I feel sorry for you.
It's gonna be a while till I buy anything but Shimano or Magura brakes.
If not for other reasons, then just to avoid brake fluid.
....if Magura get their price to quality ratio fixed that is, else I'm gonna stick with Shimano.

Well, I did a ride yesterday afternoon after a impressive rain event last week ( some of us got almost 2 feet of rain in 3 days ). Waterfalls abound and the trails were in good shape. That is the good news. The RX brake levers still went to the bars again with no modulation. I think I'm done with them. I might take them to the West Coast distributor, which is located about an hour south of me, and see if they can bled them right. If not, they're gone. :x

I'm sorry to hear that.
Have you thought about replacing the seals, and running mineral oil in them?

I like your idea, but right now I'm ready to use them as paper weights.

I meant after they get "paper weight" status that is ;)
Somebody on Huckingkitty had seals made for this type of conversion. I think it was for Formula brakes, but may be wrong.

At this point I have given up trying to get a good bleed. I talked to my mechanic buddy and he is well aware of my frustration. He told me he has done successful bleeds on them, but it takes a while. I'm going to let him have at it. Will see. :x

Bump..........the brakes had to go Formula for bleeding as my buddy was not successful at his shop. The bike is ready to be picked up, which I'll get this week, however in the e-mail he sent me he mentioned the word "hope". It doesn't sound good. :|

Get the SLX or Zee brakes. That's how I solved my MT8 problem. ;)

Hope is ironically enough, usually a bad word. :(

Hope is just not really a name/term I find suitable for safety critical equipment.

Just think about it:

You: are my brakes working now
Mech: I hope so

i think I would be somewhat less than happy with that answer :D

^^ When he said "hope", he was referring to the throw of the brake lever and he hoped i was going to be happy with it. Thats what concerns me.

I just picked up my bike and it's still the same thing with the brake lever action. My advise is don't buy formula rx brakes..................they suck. :x

I'm sorry to hear that, after all the trouble you went through.
Any chance to return it for a refund?

Believe it or not I still have these on my hardtail. I found another mechanic to do a bleed on them again. The front brake felt good, the rear brake had almost no travel on the lever when I got them back from the shop. Now, the rear lever is as hard as a rock and the rear caliper is locked up. It's time for Shimano.

I had a set of strokers so I feel your pain. They worked just not well. Shimmies have been great.

Had no problem selling the Hayes either. There’s an ass for every seat as they say in the used car biz
