Joe, do you have any tips for riding near Vegas? I have a free Friday. I looked at some guided tours on bikes in the Red Rock canyon but they require at least two riders per ride (and I am alone). Maybe I will buy two tickets.

Hit up EB asking for at tour guide. Our guide (who we meet on the trail halfway up Kibbles n Bits) was awesome and showed us a very nice decent back to the car.

You should be ok on your own, following that guide above and a quick trail map preview.

"I believe Las Vegas cyclery down the road on Charleston blvd has free map."
Just be sure to tell the wife when you are leaving, when to expect a call on your return, a trail map with your intended route and the number to the ranger station. It's pretty gnarly and no cell service in the canyon... Just saying. ;)
I won't be able to join you :( but take pictures!

Thank you Joe. I am going alone, Hana injured her knee at Highland last weekend. I am packing a helmet and my riding shoes, I hope I'll find an opportunity to ride.

Nah, I think their super tech would be considered normal riding back east, perhaps with the higher risk involved with sharp pointy cactus and exposed cliffs.
The trail we rode in Red Rock was tech as far as rock gardens, but much much easier to ride than say Needham town forest. Sorry again about that... :)

Hey Sti,

Bootleg is more technical than Red Rock. I rode Red Rock/Blue Diamond in September.

Although I haven't ridden Bootleg, I have been up and down the fire road that get's you to the top. It has some SUPER extreme tech if you've got the balls for it. I'm talking Red Bull competition stuff. HOWEVER, it does have some great not so gnarly stuff. It's steeper, more exposed, more technical, and more risky than Red Rock. To me, Red Rock was more like XC with some tech sections mixed in. Bootleg is more Downhill/Black Diamond/Enduro with some XC mixed in.

Not trying to scare you, just want you to understand the place going in. One of our Off Camber Crew guys "Bike&Fish" lives right near the bottom of the canyon and he rides it all the time. Perhaps you could hook up with him? PM him (Derek) on eMpTyBeeR and tell him that Hawg sent you. He's a great guy!

That sounds great, thanks Hawg! I already put a deposit on the group ride, and I believe they won't want to have their customers killed.

Sure thing Joe. I will take you up to the top of Brown Mtn. Then we will detour half way back down and do El Prieto ST. We park near NASA Jet Propulsion Lab.
Are you in So Cal or back East?

I am alive! And I had tons of fun there, great riding! I tagged along two local riderds who showed me around. The trails I rode (Girl Scout up and down, Boy Scout, Inner Caldera, IMBA, POW, Lake view trail) were not uber technical per se, but the exposure at some spots and loose sand in fast turns made them fairly challenging for me, it was definitely a new experience for me. I hope I'll come back.

PS: I did not care for dat Spesh Enduro 27.5 much, I like my Ibis much better.

Oh and that picture of Joe is crazy, but there are some quite a bit worse spots in Bootleg, super narrow exposed turns with off camber rock chunks covered by dust... I almost tumbled down one.

Sti, glad you enjoyed Bootleg. What was it about the Spesh Enduro that was not to your liking? Although I have not ridden one, I hear that they are well balanced and climb very well considering their geometry.

We live in the land of the dry at this end of country. Loose terrain is almost the norm over here. You eventually get used to it.

Also, that pic looking out over the lake may actually be showing the roof top of my friend's home. He lives that close.

And finally, the bottom pic of you with the bike is so SMALL. Are you still shy? ;)

IDK, I just felt like riding on a leaf spring all the time. It was stiffer when I needed it plush and softer when I needed it stiff (that's what she said...). Perhaps it was just the poor CTD shock, few things compare to a custom tuned Avalanche coiler that I have on my HD.

About that last pic's size - let's say I was not officially there. ;)
