About to go get supplies to brew my very first batch ever. Well, more like assisting- I have a buddy who has brewed several dozen batches over the years but it's been a while, and he wants to start again. I am going to be the noob assistant and hopefully learn some new tricks today. There will be much beer consumed in the process as well so I will attempt to take pics :)

Get behind the keyboard while "testing". The results should be documented on line and interesting!

Phase 1- adding the grain to steep.

And it would be silly to be making beer, without accompanying beverages to drink, dontcha think?

This is as interesting for me as it is for you. I've never done this before, at least as an active participant. Spectated many a time over the years but always stayed out of the way and let the pros do their thing.

Now it's time for me to actually pay attention :)

Time to add the malt!

Image

CBW Golden Light liquid malt extract, 6.6 pounds of it.

Image

Adding a pound of dry malt

Image

And now that the wort is all good and syrupy, and the kitchen is taking on the aroma of beer... Time to add the hops!

Image

And the first OHSHITWTFDIDIJUSTDO!!!! Moment... He was so excited to add the hops that he dumped them right into the wort. Woops lol, strain it out and put it into the hop socks as intended...

Image

And the bittering hops are...

Image

So now we wait for the wort to boil.

And the boil begins!

Image

Time to get our drink on and babysit so it doesn't overflow during the boil.

Flavoring hops added, and the boil has a completely different aroma now. It's the cascade, which has a distinctly citrusy aroma.

Finishing hops, even more floral than the previous. The boil is done and the process is finishing.

And the hard part is done. The wort is in the bathtub on a quick-chill mission, and it's break time.

This is the harpoon leviathan, and it's what we hope our finished product looks like. Should finish around 7.0 by his calculations.

How long does it take from now for your brew to finish?

My mentor tells me that I should expect 10-14 days, give or take. I'm pretty excited as this has been an eye-opening experience. Making beer really is stupid easy.

Well, the recipe we based this off of I also says 8-10 days, but we added more malt and yeast so it is going to add a couple of days. He will be watching the airlock to ascertain when it needs moved to the primary fermenter, and lastly into the keg.

Maybe this is asking a bit much, but would you care to make a "timeline" in the first post?
I'd really like to keep track of this. Also perhaps the exact ingredients and amounts?

Nuthin like home made, tax free s'faced buzz! Good on ya, Big Terry. We had a guy we used to ride with that made this Black Plague Russian Stout that was for Solo Cup consumption only... I think he said it tested out at 10.5%. It was for after ride only.... Seriously, I'd pay $5 a solo cup for what he was offering up post rides. It was that good, along with the crew we rode with and the after ride talks.
