I'm going to be heading out of town for awhile so I just finished scheduling a mail delivery hold with the Post Office. Since I expect a fairly large bundle of mail to accumulate I chose to pick up the mail at the post office myself when I get back (the other option is to have the mail carrier bring it by). The online process is pretty straightforward and at the end they sent me a confirmation number so I'm set. Then it hit me, they didn't indicate at which post office the mail is going to be held.
Uh, that's pretty vital information. No wonder the Postal service is going down the tubes.

Watching the news and am sending best wishes to all our TX kitties.
We got 7" of rain overnight on 8/11 with much trail damage.
Cannot imagine what 25" plus will do..

No idea but it seems he's doing more road riding and backpacking these days and no MTB. Also, his kids are teenagers now so I assume he does not have much time for on-line shenanigans here.

You're probably right.
It was just strange, as he went from spending loads of time here, to completely gone, overnight.

Hope he's alright. That scenario happens quite a bit over on that other ugly site.;) It's kind of unnerving having someone spend so much time somewhere and then completely disappear over night without a word. I understand going for personal reasons but at least give a shout out letting everyone know you are ok.

Wasn’t sure where to post this:

My X girlfriend lives in Blossom Valley, east San Diego. She lives in a guest house on a ranch property and takes care of several horses. She is very good friends with an older couple down the street and helps them around their property. So nice are they, they gave her a horse a couple of years ago. They are doing a major cleanup on the property and on the back of the property there are 3 out buildings that have had bee hives in them for years. The owners never thought anything of it. Yesterday a helper was running a Bobcat. The noise and vibration alerted the bees. Turns out they are Africanized Killer Bees. They attacked the operator of the Bobcat, he luckily made it inside the house but still got several stings. The bees turned on the two horses and thousands of bees repeatedly stung them killing one of them The other barely made it through the night. Only because of my X is a nurse and knew what to do. The vet told them to wait until nightfall and the bees would go into a dormant state. Once that happened she was able to get out there and administer some meds. Still up in the air if that horse is going to make it but it’s looking better. Both horses are very old and one that died is the mother of the other. The white one is the younger one and is my X's horse which is the one that survived and was in deep pain whinnying all night watching her mother die. There will be a special team coming out this week to exterminate the 5 hives.

But how do you tell bee spieces apart?
This sounds like rather important information.

Pretty difficult to do that. In the Southwest they are recommending treating every hive as if they are Africanized. Calling the experts in to have them removed, the experts will save the European bees and exterminate the Africanized hives.

This article was written in 2010 so I’m sure it’s getting worse.

DJ, Sorry to hear this happened. Despite being 9 years ago, Bee genocide is ongoing. The impact of invasive species causes largely unmeasured devastation.

Around here we have also upped the weapons race one notch lately.
We have issues with snails, and while hedgehogs should balance that out, they don't, as people kill the hedgehogs when they use snail poison.
We have taken the opposite approach, and binned anything that rembles poison in the neighborhood.
Instead we feed the hedgehogs, so they breed like rabbits.
Result?
Zero snail issues, in return for a handfull of cat food a day during the summer, and this in spite of the fact that we live next to a wild area.
The hedgehogs comes to dine at our place every night as it turns dark, and in the process, they walk through the garden in a wide line, so we hardly ever see a living snail.
It works much the same with the cats. They are first and foremost employees, and never get indoors. They sort out a track record of ZERO living mice seen on our property so far, during 15 years.
The previous cat was able to catch moles as well, but it died of age years ago. Somehow the new cats are not smart enough to do that.

Magura :)

Magura,
No poisons for me. Instead companion planting, and if needed diluted dish soap.

Blossom Valley is inland from the coast, but there's been a few africanized bee incidents out here on Point Loma in the recent past. Those little buggers get around.
